A 4ft Christmas tree sits between a table-top tree and a proper floor tree. It works in both places, which is what makes it useful.

On the floor of a small room it reads as a real tree. On a low table it becomes a centrepiece.

Who a 4ft tree is for

Small flats. Narrow hallways. Rooms with low ceilings where a 6ft tree would loom. Homes with a toddler or a cat, where a smaller tree is simply less to knock over.

It is also the best size for a first tree in a first flat. Cheap enough not to hurt, big enough to feel like Christmas.

On the floor it will look modest in a normal living room. If your room is a normal size and you want the tree to hold it, go 6ft. If floor space is genuinely tight, this is your tree.

How wide is a 4ft Christmas tree?

About 2ft 6in across at the base.

A tree is roughly two thirds as wide as it is tall. Two and a half feet is a small footprint, and that is much of the point of a 4ft tree. It will tuck into a corner or a bay without dominating.

How we measure

From the base of the trunk to the leader, the shoot at the very top where the star sits. Stand and topper are on top of that, so a 4ft tree stands taller than 4ft once it is up.

If it is going on a table, add the table height and check your ceiling.

Which 4ft tree?

4ft Nordmann Fir

The non-drop tree, and the safe choice. Thick, waxy needles that hold their moisture and stay on the branch. Watered, it holds four to five weeks.

Soft, blunt needles, which matters in a small home where the tree is always within reach of a hand or a paw.

4ft Norway Spruce

The traditional tree, and the one that smells of Christmas. In a small room the scent is strong and immediate.

It drops sooner. Put it up in mid December, water it daily, and keep it away from the radiator. It is also cheaper.

Pot grown trees

If you want something alive that goes back outside in January, our pot grown trees run 2ft to 3ft. Smaller than this, but they come back next year. See the care guide.

Decorating a 4ft tree

Around 400 lights. That is 100 per foot, and it is more than most people put on a small tree.

Use smaller baubles and fewer of them. Thirty to forty is comfortable. Standard-size ornaments will overwhelm the branches.

Work the lights from the trunk outwards rather than round the outside, so the tree glows rather than being outlined. On a small tree the difference is very visible.

Looking after it

Saw an inch off the bottom of the trunk before it goes in the stand. Sap seals the cut end within hours of harvest, and without a fresh cut the tree cannot take up water at all.

Get it straight into water and check the water every single day. A small tree in a small stand runs dry faster than a big one, not slower.

Keep it away from radiators and out of a sunny window.

A stand with a proper reservoir makes it easy. More in our guides to keeping your tree fresh and stopping needle drop.

Delivery

Free, anywhere on the UK mainland, on the date you choose. We cut and pack your tree the working day before it travels, so it arrives fresh.

Netted, a 4ft tree is a one-person carry up any staircase. More on Christmas tree delivery.
