A 10ft Christmas tree is a commercial-scale tree that some houses can take. It needs an 11ft ceiling, a lot of floor, and more than one person to put it up.

In a hotel foyer, a shop, a church, a barn conversion or a Georgian hallway, it is the tree that stops people in the doorway.

Ceiling and floor

You need 11ft of ceiling. Measure the exact spot, then take a foot off for the stand and the topper.

A 10ft tree is about 6ft 6in wide at the base. That is a very large footprint, and it will not go in a corner. It needs to be seen from all sides, and it needs room to be.

Mark it out on the floor before you order. Six and a half feet is bigger than it sounds.

Getting it in and up

Two people minimum, three preferably. A netted 10ft tree is heavy and unwieldy, and it has real momentum once it starts to go over.

Carry it in netted. Get it upright in the stand with someone holding it steady. Cut the netting from the bottom up, in the room where it will stay.

Give it several hours before decorating so the branches drop into place. Then use a proper ladder, not a chair.

Which 10ft tree?

10ft Nordmann Fir

The tree to buy at this size. Its branches are strong and tiered, so it carries commercial-weight decorations and it does not read as a solid wall of green.

Waxy needles that hold their moisture, so a watered 10ft Nordmann holds four to five weeks. In a public space, where nobody is watering it twice a day, that is not a luxury.

Soft, blunt needles, which matters when someone is up a ladder with their arm inside it.

10ft Norway Spruce

The traditional tree, and at 10ft the pine scent carries across a large room.

It drops faster. In a heated commercial space, the Nordmann is usually the more practical choice.

What it needs

A thousand lights. That is 100 per foot, and it is the figure people flinch at and then under-buy. An under-lit 10ft tree is a waste of a 10ft tree.

A heavy-duty stand with ballast. A 10ft trunk is six inches or more across. A domestic stand will not close around it and will not hold it. This is a genuine safety point, not an upsell.

Water capacity of six to seven litres, on the rule of a litre per inch of trunk diameter. It will drink hard in its first days indoors.

If the tree is going into a public space, consider our installation service. We deliver, install with proper ballast, decorate, and take it away and recycle it in January.

Looking after it

Saw an inch off the bottom of the trunk before it goes in the stand. Without a fresh cut the sealed trunk cannot take up water at all, and the tree will die quietly while looking fine for a week.

Check the water every single day. A tree this size can empty a reservoir fast, and once it runs dry the trunk seals over for good.

Keep it away from heat sources. In a foyer, that means away from the door heaters as well as the radiators.

Bigger than 10ft?

We deliver up to 13ft as a standard tree. Beyond that, and up to 60ft, it goes through our installation service. Trees over 20ft need machinery and often a steel frame.

Delivery

Free, anywhere on the UK mainland, on the date you choose. Netted and packed in a heavy-duty carrier with a cane to protect the shape.

Make sure there are people on site to receive and move it. More on Christmas tree delivery.

10ft Christmas tree FAQs

What ceiling do I need for a 10ft tree?

At least 11ft, once you allow for the stand and the topper.

How wide is a 10ft Christmas tree?

About 6ft 6in at the base.

How many lights?

Around 1,000. Work on 100 per foot.

Do I need a commercial stand?

Yes. A 10ft trunk will not fit a domestic stand, and a stand that does not grip is a hazard.

Can you install it for us?

Yes, through our installation service, including decoration and January removal.
