A 3ft Christmas tree is a table-top tree. It sits on a sideboard, a hall table or a windowsill, not on the floor.

It is the right answer for a flat, a bedroom, an office desk, a student room, or a second tree somewhere the main one does not reach.

Who a 3ft tree is for

Put a 3ft tree on the floor of a living room and it will look lost. It is not a floor tree, and pretending otherwise is how people end up disappointed.

On a surface, at eye level, it works. Raised on a table it reads as a proper tree, and it takes decorations well because everything is close to the eye.

It suits a small flat with no floor to spare, a bedroom, a child's room, a desk at work, or a hallway. It is also the sensible second tree if you already have a big one downstairs.

If you want a tree that stands on the floor and holds a room, you want a 5ft at minimum, and a 6ft more likely.

How wide is a 3ft Christmas tree?

About 2ft across at the base.

A tree is roughly two thirds as wide as it is tall, so a 3ft tree needs about two feet of surface. Check the table before you order, because a 2ft spread on a narrow console table will overhang.

How we measure

From the base of the trunk to the leader, the shoot at the top where the star sits. The stand and the topper are extra, so allow a few inches on top of the 3ft.

On a table, that matters. A 3ft tree in a stand with a star can easily reach 3ft 6in, and if it is sitting on a 2ft 6in table you are looking at a total height of six feet.

Which 3ft tree?

3ft Nordmann Fir

The non-drop tree. Waxy needles that hold their moisture, soft to the touch, and they stay on the branch. Watered, it holds four to five weeks.

On a small tree, needle drop is more noticeable, not less, because the tree is at eye level and often above a table you eat at. The Nordmann is the clean choice.

3ft Norway Spruce

The traditional tree, and the one that smells of Christmas. In a small room a 3ft spruce throws out a surprising amount of scent, which is either exactly what you want or slightly too much.

It drops sooner than a Nordmann. Water it daily and keep it off a radiator or a sunny sill.

Pot grown trees

At this size, seriously consider a pot grown tree instead. It is alive, roots and all, at 2ft to 3ft, and it goes back outside after Christmas and comes again next year.

For a table-top tree, that is often the better buy. See our pot grown tree care guide.

Decorating a 3ft tree

Around 300 lights. That is 100 per foot, and small trees get badly under-lit because people assume they need almost none.

Use small baubles. Standard-size ones look enormous on a 3ft tree and swamp it. Twenty to thirty small ornaments is plenty.

Keep the topper in proportion. A large star on a 3ft tree looks like a hat two sizes too big.

Looking after it

The same rules as a big tree, and they matter more, because a small tree holds less water and dries out faster.

Saw an inch off the trunk before it goes in the stand. Sap seals the cut end within hours of harvest, and without a fresh cut the tree cannot drink at all.

Get it into water and check it every day. A 3ft tree in a small stand can empty its reservoir overnight.

Keep it away from radiators and sunny windowsills. A windowsill is the worst place you can put a small tree, and it is where most of them end up.
