In Numbers

Doncaster has a population of around 310,000 people, and each Christmas it is estimated that around just under 40,000 real Christmas trees are put up in houses within the borough.

A study that evaluated the average spend of Christmas lights and decorations for towns and cities in the UK revealed that Doncaster was one of the lowest spenders per capita. Doncaster ranked as the 17th lowest spender, spending an average of £170 per thousand people, lower than the national average of £292 per thousand people.

Christmas Lights Switch On

Doncaster’s Christmas lights switch-on usually takes place around mid-November with the main focus area in the market square. There are plenty of festive themed activities and entertainment to welcome Christmas to the town.

You can usually expect to find a Santa’s Grotto, funfair rides, festive food including mulled wine and hot chestnuts, and of course witness the streets come alive as the Christmas Lights are illuminated.

Doncaster Christmas Tree Collection

Doncaster Council will usually collect your tree, however it will need to be placed in your green bin and cut up into smaller pieces. Remember to remove any lights, decorations and bases or stands.

Alternatively you can take your tree to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. In recent years Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice have been collecting Christmas trees for recycling, for a small donation you can have your tree collected while raising money for the hospice.
